In no particular order, and just the ones that immediately spring to mind:

“A Complicated Kindness” - Miriam Teows. An account of a girl growing up in a Mennonite community in Canada, in all its legalistic weirdness, mixed up love and kindness, and its impact on the breakdown of her family.

“Vernon God Little”– DBC Pierre, and “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” — Junot Diaz. very funny

“Why dogs sniff each others tails” Michael Leunig.

    Four will do.

  2. Ryan Says:

    Disgrace
    Youth
    The God of Small Things
    A Fine Balance

I’m worried to use up my last slot in case I’ve missed something.

  3. andrew Says:

God of Small Things might be my fifth

  5. Tom Says:

The Bible - God and Friends

Captain Correlli’s Mandolin - Louis DeBerniaries

    Making Movies - Sidney Lumet

    I can’t think of another 2.

  6. Janet Says:

I struggle with limiting this to five only …

To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee – a book that influenced me a lot in my youth.
The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy
A Fortunate Life, Albert Facey [I think]
    Lord of the Rings, Tolkien
The Outsider, Albert Camus – again, very influential in my youth
    Cloudstreet, Tim Winton

And I fear that some of the following may well bump some of the featured ones off. I just haven’t ‘read them yet.
    A Suitable Boy
    A Fine Balance
    The Book Thief
    The Lovely Bones
    A Fine Balance

  7. Fi Says:

    Uhm…
The curious incident of the dog in the night time
The short but incredibly happy life of RILEY
    Romans
    Psalms
and I am enjoying currently reading The hobbit
