McPatatas

After 3 months I have found wedges in Central America. They are in McDonalds. Alas they don’t come with sweet chilli sauce and sour cream though. And they cost about $2 for a drink size serving (that means they come in a cup), but nonetheless they are wedges and they taste good.
(Tried not to think […]

Dag

I am having trouble describing what a dag or daggy is to Americans. It is not nerd. It is not loser. It is not geek. What is it, how does one describe it (apart from its literal translation which I tried once but it didn’t really work)?

Growing Up

So I have mentioned previously some of my ‘cringes’ and I wanted to report on the status of one of my cringes- the saying grace in restaurants cringe. Well, on the weekend there was a very large group of us doing visits around Guatemala to various children’s homes etc. We ate at various restaurants and […]

Ha Ha Josué

So I was suggesting to the people that I live with that perhaps I could make stir-fry some time and describing how to cook it (and my mouth was watering at the thought of it) and Josué who is 8 looks up at his Mum with a scrunched up face and says “Vegetables and rice, […]

On the Road Again

On Monday I got to drive for the first time in Guatemala. It was fun. Diego and I drove to the gym close to our house to check it out and do some exercise. It was fun. I am not so confident to drive any further just yet.

Lost and Found

On Sunday I lost my wallet. On Monday I found it.
It was returned to me by a Don Lee Chinese Restaurant delivery boy (man).
It was returned with all cards, minus all cash, except for one Cuban peso.
Those damn pesos, I will never be rid of them!!

I’ve Been Moved

I am sorry too.
Thanks Kevin.

We just visited Blockbuster (pronounced blukboosta) because we thought it would be a good night for a stay at home movie. Now I remember the days when I used to walk up the road a few paces to rent the DVD for the evening in my trakkies and uggys. Well, let me tell you, times […]

Dangerous Profession

Here in Guatemala being a bus driver is risky business. A spurt of recent killings of bus drivers in Guatemala City has come after a change in presidency. Some say that the gangs kill them after trying to force the drivers to give them a cut of their earnings for driving in ‘their territory’. Some […]

Sunday Prayer

Blessed are the poor…
not the penniless
but those whose heart is free.
Blessed are those who mourn…
not those who whimper
but those who raise their voices.
Blessed are the meek…
not the soft
but those who are patient and tolerant.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice…
not those who whine
but those who struggle.
Blessed are the merciful…
not those who forget
but those […]
